The Craig Valley Branch as Remembered by Carl H Nelson
INTRODUCTION
The January 1, 1916 issue of C&O's station listing book shows the most named stations on the Craig Valley line. Names appeared, disappeared, and changed over time, but this is a look at the line during its most productive times.
The C&O's Craig Valley Branch was completed and opened for traffic on August 24, 1891, exactly a century ago.[1] It ran 26.5 miles from a junction with the James River Subdivision just west of Eagle Rock (formerly Eagle Mountain), Virginia, to a terminus at New Castle (formerly Craig City), Virginia, following the course of Craig Creek most of the distance. The line was abandoned and dismantled in August 1961.
Like most branch line railroads the Craig Valley line was built with grand dreams of heavy traffic, industrial development, commerce, and business, and died when these came and went or never came at all. The Craig Valley was built expecting the development of a heavy mining industry, but this development was shorter lived and less significant than had been expected. Unlike most C&O branches, especially those in West Virginia and Kentucky, the mineral to be extracted was iron ore.
