Back of book
The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway long held the distinction of being the world's largest originator of bituminous coal, and the company's public relations department liked to call the line the "Coal Bin of America." This book traces the C&O's coal traffic from the earliest beginnings of the railway. Chapters detail operations on each of the C&O's major coal districts as the railway designated them in its 1944 Coal Mine Directory, with photos showing terminals and mainline operations, as well as the actual tipples and branches which fed the huge flow of coal eastward to Newport News, on Virginia's great Hampton Roads habor, and westward to Great Lakes shipping at Toledo. Photos show operations during the 1940-1960 period. Maps help establish the geographical locations discussed in each chapter, which are arranged geographically east-west.
