One of the most famous and often discussed steam locomotives on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway was its J-3/J-3A class 4-8-4 type called "Greenbrier" by the railway. Although the usual name for this type locomotive was "Northern," the C&O, with its roots in old Virginia didn't want to use this title, so adopted one that associated with the territory of southeastern West Virginia through which the locomotives would haul their trains.
Although only seven J-3 and five J-3a locomotives were built, their popularity among railroad historians, model railroaders and enthusiasts is far out of proportion to these few numbers. They were used almost exclusively between Charlottesville, Virginia, and Hinton, West Virginia, over the mountainous region with steep grades. This was also a region where the passenger train consists were the heaviest, thus requiring maximum motive power.
These locomotives were so well proportioned and handsome with their compact, powerful figures, that they are among the most aesthetically pleasing of steam engines.
This book traces the history of these fabulous locomotives from 1935 through the last to operate in 1955, with photos, drawings, maps, tables of data, and a cogent historical summary of their service and importance technologically.
