Chesapeake & Ohio Freight Cars 1937 - 1965 Volume 1 Hopper and Gondola Cars HC
Chesapeake and Ohio Freight Cars 1937 to 1965 Volume 1 Hopper and Gondola Cars By Al Kresse Jr Hard Cover 1996 201 pages
The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Company had two main marketing groups: passenger/express transporting and freight hauling. If we oversimplify the latter, the freight hauling groups were further divided between two major markets: coal (the traditional C&O business) and automobile materials, parts and final products (the merged Pere Marquette Railway business). Hopper cars were the heart of the coal-hauling business. Mill gondola cars also carried coal. However these were multipurpose cargo hauling cars and carried materials, such as wrought steel from the steel mills for further processing into commercial products, and scrap steel back to the mills. Other gondolas were just general purpose loose material haulers. This bulk material hauling business made profits by moving vast quantities of coal, coke and ore, or processed materials, with the least amount of capital investments. Profits could be measured by the percentage of the time that hoppers or gondola cars, sometimes with specialized containers or bulkheads, were utilized to move their targeted products. Improvements in freight cars that centered upon the search for means to carry heavier loads or with greater efficiency, are presented to the reader to analyze. This will provide insight on how the bulk hauling business got to where it is today. Reduction in car maintenance and rebuilding, or modifying cars for specialized materials filled a need in this striving for improved efficiency.
