This is the sixth in our Quarterly History book series (Second Quarter 2014) and deals with the General Motors Electro-Motive Division E8 model C&O diesels that hauled the railway's passenger trains in the 1951-1971 era, which is still so familiar to many who witnessed the last years of that great service. Included also is a history of the E7 units that were purchased by C&O's subsidiary Pere Marquette Railway but very soon became C&O units when the PM merged into the Chessie system in 1947
Much of the text for this book is taken from two issues of the C&O Historical Magazine, which has been somewhat modified and reworked. The newest part of the story is the color section. It allows us to depict these great looking locomotives and trains they pulled in full color. It expands the treatment possible in the magazines and also consolidates the subject into one publication that can be readily referenced.
The E8, hauling the C&O's great fleet of blue, yellow, and silver passenger trains in the last great days of their service 1951-1971, was much photographed by railfans, and was used by the railway as a major advertising image. These locomotives are very much intertwined with the history of the C&O in its later decades.
The story really begins with the Pere Marquette units because when they arrived for the fairly short runs in Michigan the "old C&O" was staunchly steam. It was only in 1951-52 that C&O finally dieselized its passenger trains on the main lines in Virginia-West Virginia-Kentucky-Ohio. Therefore, our story will begin in Michigan on the Pere Marquette. The
E7s became surplus as passenger service declined and were leased to B&O in their later years. The E8s remained in service, many of them operating on B&O trains, until Amtrak's takeover of American passenger service on May 1, 1971. Amtrak purchased a few of the C&O units, which were quickly retired and scrapped as Amtrak bought its own motive power. None of the C&O's E7s or E8s survive.
I began my railfan interest with the E8s, becoming fascinated by them and their trains as they passed through my hometown of Alderson, West
Virginia. I was able to ride in the cabs of these engines on several occasions, thanks to the friendship of engineer John Murphy of Clifton Forge, Va., who had the regular run Trains No. 3 (The FFV) and No. 4 (The Sportsman) between Clifton Forge and Hinton. These locomotives are my favorites of all C&O diesels, and hold a very special place in my memories of other days and times. I was lucky to see and experience them, even though it was in their twilight years, and I welcome this opportunity to tell their story.
