The former concentrates on the decades, 1960-1990; the latter, 1940-1960. The former largely restricts its coverage to each coal field in order to include as many branchlines as possible-even those no longer hauling coal-and the latter gives a \"larger picture\" by going beyond the actual ` fields to include mainline \"action,\" plans and specifications of coal cars and coalfield locomotives, and the facility at Newport News, Virginia, for transshipment of coal to ocean-going colliers.
