The three photos on this cover represent the variety of contents of Chesapeake and Ohio, Coal, and Color. Each includes a different coal field, a different locomotive manufacturer, a different decade, and a different photographer. Yet variety does not mean a lack of concentration in content, for the book focuses on coal field operations of the Chesapeake and Ohio in scenic southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southern Ohio, and carries the concentrated coverage through the C&O-B&O merger years to the present CSX ownership.
In covering the six coal fields-sites of heavy duty railroading amid glorious Appalachian scenery-from the end of steam power in 1956 to the powerful diesels of 1996, the hook presents in full color, photos of several different types of steam locomotives and over 25 distinctive diesel models, as well as illustrations of ancillary operations, such as the rail-to-river transfer facilities on the Ohio River at Huntington and the Winifrede Railroad's on the Kanawha.
This is the second recent publication of the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society to concentrate photographically on the coalfield operations of the railroad which long held the distinction of being the "world's largest originator of bituminous coal." Chesapeake and Ohio, Coil, and Color is a fitting companion to Thomas W. Dixon, Jr.'s Chesapeake cod Ohio in the Coalfields (1995). One complements the other. The former is all color, representing the work of contemporary railfan photographers: the latter, mostly black and white, emphasizes official "company" photographers with access to a wider range of subjects than an amateur can muster. The former concentrates on the decades, 1960-1990; the latter, 1940-1960. The former largely restricts its coverage to each coal field in order to include as many branchlines as possible-even those no longer hauling coal-and the latter gives a "larger picture" by going beyond the actual ` fields to include mainline "action," plans and specifications of coal cars and coalfield locomotives, and the facility at Newport News, Virginia, for transshipment of coal to ocean-going colliers. Both include textual histories of the coal fields that together give the reader clear and coherent coverage of coal field development.
