INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this book is to provide either the person new to C&O history or the person who has studied C&O history for a long time, with a single-source, quick-reference about the railway.
Included is a short, concise overview history, followed by a tour over the old mainline east-to-west. Following this are chapters and sections about various subjects that may be of interest to modelers, railfans, historians, or others interested in the C&O.
Appropriate emphasis is given to the organization of the railway's line by subdivision and station, including an outline of its facilities and yards. Equipment coverage includes both steam and diesel locomotives, and freight and passenger cars. A special section deals with coal's role on the C&O, and some of the most important leaders of the C&O over time are mentioned. Finally, a short explanation is given about the Romance of the C&O, its lure, its folklore, and all that goes into making its character as a company, as a transportation system, and indeed, as a way of life for many thousands over many decades between the line's conception in Louisa County, Virginia in 1836 until its merger into Chessie System in the 1970s and its disappearance into the CSX of today.
Most chapters have a note at the end that lists the most readily available sources to which the reader may refer for more extensive treatment of the subject of that particular chapter. In this way this book serves as a bibliographic guide for someone wanting more particular information about a subject.
Many of the materials cited have been published by the C&O Historical Society over the years since its inception in 1969, and beyond that, many are still available for purchase from the Society, in which case the catalog number has been cited so that the reader may order it quickly from the Society by calling 800-453-2647, or by consulting the society sales web site at chessieshop.com. The cohs.org web site is about the archives and history and will also be a further reference and guide for anyone wanting more details about the C&O.
It should be understood that this is, in fact, a reference book, so it is arranged as an abbreviated gazetteer and almanac
in format, not necessarily to be read from front to back, but to be consulted.
No index is included because it is felt that the subjects arrange themselves in such a way as to make the book itself an index of C&O resources.
