G. Chapman's railway books for \"Boys of All Ages\" successfully launched by Patrick Stephens. In the   case of the four new editions published so far I have been struck by the high standard of the reprinting process, which has lost nothing of the quality of the originals. Consequently, I am very excited about the prospects for \"Cheltenham Flyer\" because, if anything, the original is a much more comprehensive and lavishly produced book than any of the previously reprinted titles.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eAs Mr. Chapman's own foreword states, \"Cheltenham Flyer\" was intended as an up-to-date version of \"The 10.3o Limited\" and the opportunity was taken to increase the contents from 136 pages in the case of \"The 10.3o Limited\" to 232 pages in \"Cheltenham Flyer\". New pen sketches were drawn in the same delightful style to head the rearranged chapters, while new material, new illustrations and a further II years of G.W.R. development greatly expanded the contents.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eFor the first time in the series a most modern style of layout was employed which exploited the full size of the page, allowing the photographic illustrations to print right to the edge of the paper-a point which appealed to me greatly at the time, since it appeared so new and novel in 1934. The standard of the illustrations was further improved by the use of good quality paper throughout. Certainly these innovations resulted in a number of large and commendable photographs being reproduced, many of them to full page size. As a railway modeller I have drawn great inspiration from a number of these illustrations, particularly those of rolling stock on pages 153, 155, 177, 179 and 181, and the details which can be gleaned from such close-up shots as those on pages 43, 120, 148 and 164.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe 'thirties was an interesting period in the life of Britain's railways and for the G.W.R. no less than the other three main railway companies. New developments such as diesel rail cars, colour light signalling and steel sleepers were being tried and the quest for speed was uppermost. The 'thirties was probably the golden decade for record breaking in the air, on water and on wheels, so it was natural that the G.W.R. would wish to claim maximum publicity for its achievement in operating the world's fastest train. Although the train bore the name \"Cheltenham Flyer\" the high speed part of the journey was only achieved over the 77f miles from Swindon to London. However, in 1934 the high average speed of 71.3 m.p.h. was such that \"Americans, Chinese, Frenchmen, Germans and Indians and visitors from other countries made a great point of including a trip on the world's fastest train in their itineraries\"-or so W. G. Chapman writes on page 8. Such was the uncomplicated innocence and enthusiasm of the 'thirties, an attitude to life which contrasts with today when we seem to take so much for granted. In the 'seventies the prospect of air travel at 600 m.p.h. or even rail travel at more than 100 m.p.h. is hardly given a second thought.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:0.82em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eI join W.
