It would be impossible to call out everyone who helped with the project over fifty years, but perhaps the sophomore class world history teacher at the High School of Charleston was the most important, because as a transfer student I had to take this class to graduate. We all were required to do a paper on Sergeant Jasper. Virtually unknown outside of the Charleston area, this valiant soldier protected the inlet between the Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island on the Atlantic Coast from the invading British forces in the Revolutionary War period. This tidal inlet was treacherous and washed the Brits out to sea. I often rode over the bridge that connects the two islands and every time I doffed my hat, in imagination, to his gallant defense of the area.
