The Changing Patterns of International Trade RSMA Soft Cover 1969 105 pages Railway Systems and Management Association
MR. STENASON: Inasmuch as Canadian Pacific considers itself to be "The World's Most Complete Transportation System," both the theme of this Conference, "The Changing Patterns of International Trade," and the particular topic on which I have been asked to speak, "The Role of Intermodal Transportation," are subjects which are of great interest to my Company. Inasmuch as I am charged with responsibility for our ocean shipping, telecommunications, and highway operations, they are of especial interest to me personally.
It would be somewhat trite to say that the theme of this Conference and the topic of my remarks are timely subjects, since matters of international trade, as well as all facets of transportation, are always timely subjects. The patterns of international trade have been undergoing change since the dawn of civilization. As transportation constitutes an essential component of international, as well as domestic trade, it is one of the most important factors in the economic welfare of any nation. Expenditure on all forms of transportation represent some 20 percent of the gross national product of the United States. In Canada, with our much greater sparsity of population, expenditures on transportation are between 25 and 30 percent of gross national product. Since, in general, reserves of raw materials are located in relatively remote areas which are far removed from the more densely populated areas in which they are ultimately consumed, transportation services are necessary to convey raw materials to processing or manufacturing centres and to distribute the finished or semi-finished products from such centres to their subsequent or final destinations. Efficient, adequate and economical transportation systems are therefore vital to the commercial activities and the consequent economic wellbeing of all nations.
The growth and development of my own country during the past century is an outstanding example of the importance of transportation. As many of you are probably aware, the economic development of Canada has been closely related to that of its two major railway systems and, in particular, to that of Canadian Pacific. At the time of the Canadian ConfederaOntario, Quebec, and the Eastern Maritime Provinces.
