Of all city transit systems in the U.S., Boston's subway is not only the first, but the most celebrated in song and story. It has been the subject of verse
by Oliver Wendell Holmes; a Kingston Trio smash-hit record, M.T.A.; and a classic science-fiction tale comparing it to a Mobius band, the twisted strip that has only one side and no end.
This book marks the 75th anniversary of the day a Boston trolley car first plunged down a subway "incline" to deposit passengers at Park Street station under Boston Common. With the tunneling of Beacon Hill there came to be a "Park Street Under." Today, under authority of the "T" (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), Boston's subway-tunnel-el-surface line complex extends octopus tentacles even out to encircling Route 128.
In transit, the Boston system has made transit history, both technically and in solving mass-transportation problems peculiar to itself. CHANGE AT PARK STREET UNDER tells the story with authority and zest, together with a full roster of rolling stock, numerous rare and contemporary photos, and track and car plans.
