When CERA was organized in 1938. its activities were balanced between operating inspection trips, conducting meetings and publishing Bulletins. Many of the early Bulletins were issued on inspection trips and served as a guide to those riding on the train. With the abandonment of the interurban lines and street railways, the Bulletins gained increased significance in the work of CERA, They became a means to record and remember the past. In 1976. the effort devoted to Bulletins exceeds the combined efforts devoted to all other activities of the organization.
Bulletin number I was issued for trip number 2 on June 19.1938. This trip operated over the entire interurban system of the North Shore Line. The print order for the Bulletin was 1,000 copies of which 500 copies were given to the railroad and 180 copies were distributed to those riding the train. In today's economy we note with envy that the entire cost of Bulletin number I was S29.00.
Interest has been expressed that these early Bulletins be made available. Therefore. as a means of preserving mementos of CERA's history in this Bicentennial year we have rephotographed copies of the original Bulletins just as they were issued in the period 1938-1940. Bulletin 17, the original Bulletin on the Indiana Railroad System, has been omitted. The information contained therein is incorporated in Bulletin 91 which has been reprinted separately. No attempt has been made to change, correct, or up-date the status of research that is presented in these Bulletins. Rather they are offered as testimony to the diligent efforts of a few individuals to record information in the developmental period of our hobby.
