For the past 100 years. Railway Magazine has been synonymous with the world of railways. Ft has chronicled their achievements, predicted their fortunes. celebrated their triumphs and chastised their fairings. as well as faithfully and comprehensively recording the enormous changes that have taken place during that time.
The inaugural issue of Railway Magazine was published in July 1897, for the first time making available to the general public authentic information about the day-to-day running of the railways. The centenary of the launch of the magazine, which continues to lead its field, is commemorated with this lavishly produced book.
The history of the magazine is outlined together with biographies of the editors and series contributors. who have included some very well known railway writers. such as Charles Rous-Marten, Cecil J. Allen and 0. S. Nock. Their present-day successor, Peter W. B. Semmens. contributes a fully illustrated feature on the highlights and key news items from the past 100 years of railways. These range from the opening of the Great Central Railway's London Extension, which took place a month after the magazine's first issue appeared, through to the current privatisation of BR.
As a tribute to the remarkable achievement of a century of publishing. the Guild of Railway Artists has assembled a gallery of paintings depicting a wide variety of views of the changing railway scene throughout this period, both at home and abroad. The work of more than 30 artists is featured and. for each, biographical details and a portrait are included.
This unique volume is the perfect companion for all regular readers of Railway Magazine and will also be of great interest to all lovers of fine art. It provides a valuable work of reference for those studying the railways of the 20th century.
