In their heyday, railroads served as the backbone of American transportation - moving everything from high-priority milk, silks, and mail to bulky commodities, finished or unfinished. Railroads also moved people, whether they wished to travel from one town to the next in their daily commute to work or across the nation.
Pullman excelled in providing first-class passenger service with an expansive fleet of sleepers and other cars operating all across the nation's railroads. Pullman varied the cars in many ways to reflect the needs of local markets, special trains, and elite clientele. These variations, along with the natural evolution of passenger service and its collateral effect on car designs, create a fascinating subject - one that is carefully and thoroughly examined in this historic series.
This Volume contains the names of passenger cars built and/or used in Pullman service, including the names of cars of the Woodruff, Mann, Wagner, and other sleeping car companies acquired by Pullman.
The Alphabetical List provides a guide that will enable historians and enthusiasts to locate more detailed information, including renaming, rebuilding, and dispositions, which is presented in later volumes.
Also contained in Volume I is the 1859-1969 all-time list of over 22,000 car names arranged alphabetically, for quick reference, along with columns entitled Car Type, Builder (Owner), Date Built, and Pullman Plan and Lot Numbers.
