Since the inception of railways in the early part of the nineteenth century, model railways - in one form or the other-have endeavoured to imitate their development. This book is primarily concerned with illustrating how commercial manufacturers interpreted the changes that occurred during the period 1870-1970, both in the style of con temporary railways and in the social and economic conditions in which they had to sell their products.
The author and his photographer travelled many miles; both in the UK and abroad in an endeavour to provide illustrations of as broad a selection of model trains, representative of this period, as was possible within the confines of a single volume. The author notes that this book might have been entitled 'A Century of Model Trains - A European View', and, indeed, great emphasis is given to the work of the German model train industry for the Continent of Europe, Great Britain and the USA. In particular, readers will be fascinated to observe the manner in which the work of Gebr. Marklin alone, appears throughout the chronological sections of this book.
Having been closely involved at one time with BassettLowke Limited (one of the most illustrious names ever to grace this field), the author is in a position to give some interesting insights into the events of that time.
The edition includes over 500 illustrations of which 187 are in full colour; there is also included - at the end of the book - a comprehensive guide to further reading.
