The exciting history of the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey is that of one of the oldest railroads in America. It began with the chartering of the Elizabethtown & Somerville Railroad Company on February 9, 1831, by a special act of the New Jersey state legislature.
It took the next five years to raise money to buy the land for the railroad, build it, and get ready for opening day. That day was August 13, 1836, when the first train rolled over the tracks between downtown Elizabeth (then Elizabethtown) and the Elizabethport ferry dock at the foot of what is now Broadway, about 2 miles away. At Elizabethport (then Elizabethtown Point), a steam boat owned by the Elizabethport and New York Ferry Company transported passengers and freight to Bergen Point (Bayonne) and Pier 1 (South Ferry), Manhattan.
