THIS BOOK is the story, for the greater part pictorially told, of the far-flung Southern Pacific Railroad system that dominates the West Coast of the United States from Oregon to Los Angeles and then heads across Texas and the Deep Southwest for romantic New Orleans, and of the Central Pacific Railroad that was its earliest component.
It is the story of romantic yesterdays in Utah, Nevada and California in the age of the swaggering railroad builders and moguls of transport who later became virtuosos of operational technique, whose ultimate masterpieces were the great trains of the West, The Overland Limited, The Sunset, The Shasta, The Golden Gate Special, Forty-Niner, Golden State, Daylight, Lark and The City of San Francisco. The Southern Pacific and its connections on the fabled Overland Route first and most effectively made California a part of the United States. It was the vehicle of empire in the days when Tombstone was the prototype of frontier violence.
Here will be found many rare and hitherto unpublished photographs of construction times in Utah and Nevada, stunning action photographs from the turn of the century when speed photography was in its infancy and a voluminous portrait gallery of the crack flyers and candy trains of only it yesterday by such acknowledged cameramen as Richard Steinheimer, Fred Jukes, Gerald Best, Donald Duke, A. E. Brown, Stan Kistler, Richard Kindig, James NI. Morley and Philip Hastings. There are ample maps and documentary reproduce Lions, a complete index and a detailed pedigree of the most important name trains that have adorned the company's timetables and train sheets from 1869 to 1963.
"The Central Pacific & The Southern Pacific Railroads" is a centennial monument to the richly romantic carrier over whose rails rode more of the history of the American West than any other.
