Wer moglichst schnell in den Siiden, ans Meer fahren will, wird mit den Centovalli und deren italienischer Fortsetzung, der Valle Vigezzo, nie Bekanntschaft machen. Sie konnte nach einem Vierteljahrhundert Planungs-und Bauzeit 1923 erOffnet werden und erfullt seither wichtige Funktionen sowohl Mr den Regionalverkehr als auch fur Transitreisende, die vom Tessin in die Westschweiz oder nach Bern und ins Berner Oberland gelangen wollen. Und als eigentliche Gebirgsbahn sie iiberwindet mehr als 1100 Meter Hohendifferenz durch eine wilde, zuweilen unbezahmbare, aber immer pittoreske Landschaft wird sie auch von Touristen rege beniitzt.
Das vorliegende Buch stellt die Centovalli und die Valle Vigezzo in Wort und Bild als eine die politischen Grenzen iibergreifende Natur-und Kulturlandschaft dar. Auf einer Reise von Locarno nach Domodossola werden die Dorfer auf der Strecke besucht, in denen man noch viel traditionelle Lebensart pflegt und die oftmals Kunstschatze und Kulturgilter bergen, die den Vergleich mit weit beruhmteren Objekten nicht zu scheuen brauchen. Abstecher in die Seitentaler und auf die Berge beidseits der Haupttaler fiihren die Vielseitigkeit der Natur der Centovalli und der Valle Vigezzo eindriicklich vor Augen. If you want to go to the Siiden, to the sea, as quickly as possible, you will never get to know the Centovalli and their Italian continuation, the Valle Vigezzo. Because the valleys are away from the major traffic flows, they connect Ticino with the Toce plain or, in other words, the Gotthard with the Simplon transit axis. Due to their remoteness and distinctive topography the name Centovalli (one hundred valleys) refers to the strongly fragmented flanks of this valley they have been able to preserve their traditional, alpine culture to the present day.
Nowhere else can you find so many picturesque villages that have been preserved in their original form as in the Centovalli and the Valle Vigezzo. The narrow-gauge railway, which connects the two Mier and connects the cities of Locarno and Domodossola, is also unique. It was opened in 1923 after a quarter of a century of planning and construction and has since fulfilled important functions both for regional traffic and for transit travellers who want to get from Ticino to western Switzerland or to Bern and the Bernese Oberland. And as a real mountain railway it overcomes more than 1100 meters difference in altitude through a wild, sometimes untamable, but always picturesque landscape, it is also actively used by tourists.
The present book presents the Centovalli and the Valle Vigezzo in words and pictures as a natural and cultural landscape that transcends political borders. On a journey from Locarno to Domodossola, you will visit the villages along the way, where there is still a lot of traditional way of life and which often hold artistic treasures and cultural monuments that do not need to shy away from comparison with far more famous objects. Detours to the side valleys and to the mountains on both sides of the main valleys reveal the diversity of nature of the Centovalli and the Valle Vigezzo. And one chapter is dedicated to the railway in the valleys, whose eventful project planning, construction and operating history is retold in detail and documented with many some of which have never been published before pictures.
Far away from the major traffic congestion, the wildly romantic Centovalli and their continuation in Italy, the Valle Vigezzo, have been able to preserve their scenic beauty and cultural character. A ride on the Locarno-Domodossola narrow-gauge railway, which opened in 1923, is therefore an experience for tourists.
