A Centennial History of Huntington, West Virginia 1871-1971
As 1971 nears its close, Huntington, West Virginia, is concluding its first hundred years. Compared to ancient cities of the world, it is but a child; Barcelona, Spain, for instance, already had seen several centuries pass when it was ruled by the Romans before the time of Christ.
Considering the age of the earth, however, any center of human habitation is young, even as man is young. Even as we are thrilled by the haunting beauty of the poet's line, we recognize there is not, nor ever has been
"A rose red city half as old as Time," except as it was created by poetic license.
Still, age is comparative. Even to those of us who have known and loved Huntington through more than half of its first century, the city seems old. Our memories of its earlier facets dim with each passing year, and the annals of its beginning are briefer than we would like to explore.
