Cement Transport History 1990 September 15 Pacific Coast Cement Corporation, Roster of Burlington Northern cement-service hoppers, standard specifications for Boyd Tanks 50 cu ft Pneumatic dry bulk trailers, more, lots of photos. 19 pages
Pacific Coast Cement Corporation began operations in 1981 to offload cement from ships and transfer the product to road transport for distribution in the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The first ship to offload its cement was the m. v. Venture Star on 4 September 1981.
The key to the operation is the Swedish built Siwertell ship unloader. It has the capacity to unload between 600 to 800 tons of cement per hour. The Siwertell unloader has a patented head (or pickup nozzle) consisting of an inner screw which rotates clockwise and an outer screw which rotates counterclockwise. This breaks the hard settled cement to within about an inch of the bottom of the ship's hold (the remainder being picked up by a special vacuum system).
Cement is then sent up the shaft and transported over to the 1000 ton/hour capacity, 400-foot long, 45-degree, 48-inch wide trough-belt dockside conveyor. A dust curtain is moved by the ship unloader just enough to permit this transfer. The 1200 cuft/minute dust collector on the ship unloader maintains negative pressure within the ship unloader and over the transfer point.
Cement travels along the 400-foot line until it reaches the vertical high speed bucket conveyor, which then carries the cement 225-feet to the top of the silos. There are airslides at each transfer point in the operation that operate by fluidizing the cement with low pressure air circulation. Each silo has a 8,300 ton capacity and there are six silos for a total of 49,800 tons. Movement of cement to each of the six silos is controlled by a series of gates and is regulated by monitors with automatic shut-off devices to prevent overloading. The entire system is all under negative pressure and entirely enclosed.
