FOREWORD
While there have been many books written about Canadian streetcars and interurbans, or radials as they sometimes were called, we are not aware of any books that have been published with all the photographs in color. Although we have been able to locate many color photos of the rolling stock in such places as Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, try as hard as we could, sadly, we were unable to find any color shots of streetcars of St. John's, Newfoundland; Cape Breton Tramways; or Levis and Hull, Quebec even though the trolleys lasted into the era of color photography. As these systems were, for the most part, remote and small, railfans focused principally on the easy-to-get-to large operations such as those listed above. In Ontario and Quebec, several operators of interurbans lingered after the War and also attracted the interest of many fans. Consequently, we are able to include pictures of such systems as the Grand River Railway; Montreal & Southern Counties Railway; Niagara, St. Catharines & Toronto (NS&T); Quebec Railway Light & Power, and London & Port Stanley Railway. Several city systems also retained freight operations after the streetcars were discontinued. Oshawa and Cornwall, Ontario come to mind. Their freight
business continued on as it did in some parts of the United States and, although such equipment doesn't strictly fit into the category of "streetcars", we took the liberty of including some photos of freight operations as well since we know many fans like them, too. For the same reason pictures of trolley coaches in those cities that had them are also part of the book.
The photographs of the various systems are presented in geographical progression, east to west. The final leg being to the north discussing the systems that operated in Sudbury, Ft. William, and Port Arthur, Ontario. (As a result of Province-mandated amalgamation, the last two cities are now known as Thunder Bay).
We hope you enjoy the book and will look forward to Volume II, "Canadian Trolleys in Color", Western Canada. It will contain pictures from the cameras of such well-known fans as Bill Bailey, Bob Gibson, and George Krambles. They have captured on color film equipment in Winnipeg, Nelson, B.C., Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, and Saskatoon.
