Welcome Aboard!
Here is the second installment in our series of "armchair journeys" through Canada by train. This time we're celebrating the past 100 years of Canadian Pacific Railway's transcontinental services by looking at almost 200 scenes taken along its mainline, between Montreal and Vancouver.
As mentioned in previous books, this work is being done aboard retired C.P.R. wooden caboose No. 436788, built in 1922. I rode this car on its final trip, across the Canadian Rockies, in 1979. Now it sits on a short piece of track in an isolated meadow, near our family cabins and small publishing business.
We appreciate the growing support from you, our readers. According to your letters and orders, the majority of you are Canadian railway employees, past and present, while the rest of you are mostly fans of Canadian trains, and many of you live outside Canada. We're glad that our books have brought so much pleasure and entertainment. It makes their aboard-a-caboose production all the more fun!
Thanks go out to numerous people who have given personal friendship, hospitality and other assistance during various research trips by train that I've made across Canada in recent years. Thanks also to my son, Okan, for his enthusiastic company on some of these trips. Thanks to Beverly and the rest of the kids for giving editorial advice, as well as spiritual support, during the various "train projects" that seem to develop in the course of our "caboose life."
Among those whom I'd like to thank specifically for assistance with this volume are the following persons and institutions: Garry Anderson, of the Cranbrook Railway Museum, home of Canada's only restored luxury train, the "Trans-Canada Limited;" Don Bain and the B.R.M.N.A. photo-book series; B.C. Provincial Museum and Archives; Roger G. Burrows (Railway Mileposts: British Columbia); Canadian Pacific Corporate Archives staff, especially Omer S. LavaHee (Van Home's Road), Jim Shields, Cecil Halsey, Dave Jones, and Peter Hrycaj; Murray W. Dean and David B. Hanna (Canadian Pacific Diesel Locomotives); Brian Clarkson, Cranbrook Photo; Helmut Fischer, Cranbrook Litho-Press; Dick George and Robert A. Paterson; Dr. Phillip Hastings; Norm Leathers; Warren E. Miller, Railway Negative Exchange; Nicholas Morant; Ronald V. Nixon; John and Ione Poulsen; Lawrence and Mavis Stuckey; Robert and Nancy Turner; Vancouver Public Library; W. C. Whittaker; Dave Wilkie; and Dale Wilson (From Abbey to Zorra via Bagdad).
A special note of appreciation goes to the former Rail Photo Service (also noted in this book as RPS), an ambitious group of U.S. railfans who made concentrated photo studies of numerous railroads and trains during the final years of steam and the period of early diesels. Prints and negatives of their work are now in many collections, which will insure permanent recognition of their historical importance
