To construct a mainline railroad across them was a task that consumed men's lives, enormous expense, and the best engineering. With fortitude and determination, however, Canadian Pacific was up to the task. Even larger capital improvements began after the turn of the 20th century. The most well-known - the Spiral Tunnels in 1909 and Connaught Tunnel in 1916 - reduced high summits and alleviated four percent grades.
