INTRODUCTION
There is an old clichto the effect that if you want to get something done promptly, ask a busy man. There is another that says that exceptions prove rules. Both of these observations are certainly appropriate as I write this introduction, acutely aware that it was as long ago as 1981 that I gave in to the gentle but persistent urging of Donald Bain to prepare a book for this popular series.
I have, indeed, been busy, having but recently completed the writing of Canadian Pacific Steam Locomotives, a book now being designed which will encompass an estimated 464 pages. It is expected to appear during the 1984-85 season. Several other books which will follow this magnum opus are in various stages of preparation. The one that is currently in the most advanced stage is International of Maine, a fully-illustrated history of the origin, construction and operation of the CPR's Moosehead and Mattawamkeag Subdivisions which comprise the section of the Montreal-Saint John main line lying within the State of Maine. All of these personal projects, however, are subject to the demands of my no-less-agreeable fulltime position as corporate historian and archivist for Canadian Pacific Limited. It is given to a relatively small number of people to have identical interests as profession and hobby; I am one of those fortunate few. These factors notwithstanding, I made a 1984 resolution to fulfill my commitment to BRMNA as a priority, and I hasten to present this volume to meet that promise. So much for the soliloquy.
