About the book
This new book will be a delight to the historian, the student of architecture, the local townspeople, as well as the railway enthusiast.
Author Charles Bohi has spent countless summers combing Canada's west for information. He has photographed several thousand stations and structures. His exhaustive studies have enabled him to write an entire volume devoted to Canadian National's depots.
And Charles' concise, interesting and informative text is accompanied by over 130 photos. But these are not simply poor snapshots of boarded-up stations you sometimes see in other books on old railroad stations. Almost all of the photos chosen are superb action shots, showing the stations in use, occupied, earning revenue, or with today's train passing through.
You'll see ASHCROFT station, still standing as a testimonial to long-gone Canadian Northern's endeavours; tiny RI EIN's (population 295) stucco-covered station in Saskatchewan; grain elevators in CEREAL, Alberta, and THUNDER BAY, Ontario.
There are trains slowed by the rough landscape of the Canadian Shield in Northern Ontario, and an old baggage car
-with the addition of a bay window - to make a suitable depot for Canadian National's predecessor.
St. Paul and Miami are some of the names you'll recognize
-but you'll look twice at the photos, because one is in Alberta, not Minnesota, and the other is in Manitoba, not Florida.
You'll see how the station agent lived along with his family in his own depot-home, complete with attractive flower gardens and neatly trimmed hedges.
You'll shiver as you think about the waiting room's potbellied stoves the agent stoked, trying vainly to keep cold prairie winds at bay.
You'll learn, through Charles Bohi's many informative sketches, just how the various stations differed, what distinctive features differentiated each type, and what to look for when you next go "station hunting".
You'll find out who built the stations still standing, with a detailed map to help you locate even the most remote depot.
You'll get details on portable depots, the role of civic pride in determining depot design. You'll share the secrets of how costs were kept low. You'll peer into the future as you examine economic changes in the west, and technological changes in railway operations affecting depots.
