FOR YEARS CANADIAN NATIONAL RAILWAYS ADVERTISED ITSELF AS "America's Largest Railway System" based on its vast network of track in all ten provinces of Canada and eleven states of the United States. In 1971, the CN rail network included 25,500 miles of track, not including double-trackage, sidings, yard tracks and spurs.
To provide passenger transportation over this network, Canadian National owned an immense fleet of passenger cars over the years. In 1950 for example, it had 3,417 passenger cars. It has been conservatively estimated that the all-time CN rolling stock roster totals some 15,000 passenger cars. Similarly, the number and variety of pieces of equipment required to maintain the right-of-way coast-to-coast was large.
This book provides a colour pictorial sample of many types of CN passenger and maintenance-of-way equipment, with an emphasis on older rather than modern. A subsequent volume will provide an overview of CN freight cars and narrow-gauge equipment of Newfoundland.
These color photographs date from 1955 to 1998 although much of the equipment shown was built many years before color photography. No attempt has been made to cover all car types of the immense CN car fleet but the intent is to show typical equipment in normal paint and lettering, rather than the rare and unusual, however there are several exceptions. The rolling stock of the subsidiary companies in the United States, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad and the Central Vermont Railway, is not included as their rolling stock was largely separate and distinct from that of the CN.
