DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
"Did a more insane idea ever take possession of anyone?" asked the Opposition member. Laurier replied, "I am well aware that this plan may scare the timid and frighten the irresolute. But I may claim that every man who has in his bosom a stout Canadian heart will welcome it as worthy of this young nation, for which a heavy task has no terrors, which has the strength to face grave duties and grave responsibilities". It was men like Wilfrid Laurier, John A. Macdonald, William Mackenzie, and Donald Mann who realized railways were the stuff of nationbuilding and ho faced the many grave crises before them. This is the exciting account of how they undertook to link a giant country by rail from sea to sea. It was a task that demanded money and patience - and both were often lacking. It is also the story of the quaint little trains that roll through Canadian backwoods, like the Newfie Bullet that boasts a human wind sniffer and the White Pass and Yukon Route that grew out of the Klondike Gold Rush but was only ready when the gold had run out. But above all, it is the story of Canada itself, growing into a nation. As the railways pushed beyond the frontier, they brought the Canadian way of life with them.
This is a comprehensive study covering the way railways are built and operated, as well as their history. Fifty illustrations tell of the events from George Stephenson's Rocket to the turbotrain.
