On behalf of the members of the Toronto Transportation Commission, I am sure I will be pardoned for expressing our sense of personal pride in the successful completion of "Canada's First Subway".
Toronto has a record for courageous and progressive thinking yet your Commission had every reason for satisfaction when a civic plebescite endorsed their recommendation for this subway by a vote of more than ten to one.
The difficulties faced in constructing a subway through the very heart of a busy and populous city are most apparent, and of necessity there was substantial temporary inconvenience to many of our businessmen and other citizens. The Commission cannot pay too high a tribute to the forebearance and public spirit which those most affected manifested under these trying circumstances. Now years of planning and skill have brought their reward and the first subway in Canada is complete. The work can reasonably be described as the most important in our city's history. It will substantially relieve traffic congestion, maintain and enhance realty values and assessments and do much to halt locally, the dispersive tendency that is so seriously affecting the future and credit of so many large cities on this continent. The Commission feels its greatest gratification at the thought that it will transport tens of thousands of workers to and from their homes, speedily and in comfort, freed forever from the inconvenience and delays inherent and inevitable in surface transportation in a crowded city.
Now, the Commission would like to pay a special tribute to all who have shared in the planning and construction of "Canada's First Subway". They have laboured harmoniously and well and our citizens can be assured that they are being presented with a work done with honesty and competence.
No one can fail to have a proud confidence in the limitless future of our Nation and of this vibrant and pulsating city of Toronto. It is our pride to have brought into existence, a public work which we believe will be considered in harmony with the spirit of Canadian progress.
