The London North Western Railway had taken the north coast of the Principality to Holyhead as its Irish mail route, instead of a more direct line from the Midlands via the valleys of the Severn, the Dovey or the Mawddach; and the Great Western Railway had kept clear of Central Wales in seeking a route from the industrial North West of England to the potentially great port of Milford Haven. So, when local promoters set about filling in the neglected railway territory, they were left with little but rural traffic to finance their efforts.
