"CPR" . . . but it's not the Canadian Pacific. The railroad that also shares these initials is the Camas Prairie, aptly subtitled by author Hal Riegger as "Idaho's railroad on stilts."
It is not too difficult to see the reasons behind the mistaken identity. Except for a few magazine articles very little has been written about the road. Yet a closer look reveals the Camas Prairie to be one of America's most scenic and fascinating railroads.
The CPR is a joint operation of the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern (formerly NP). With its home base at Lewiston, the CPR is divided into four subdivisions. The 3rd follows the Snake River Canyon west to Riparia, Washington where it connects with the UP. The 2nd subdivision splits off at Spaulding, heading southeasterly to Grangeville. Here the line traverses beautiful Lapwai Canyon and the spectacular 1300-foot Lawyer's Creek viaduct. The 4th subdivision begins at Orofino and travels northeast to Headquarters, also the home of Potlatch Forests, Inc. The 1st subdivision winds its way for 76 miles through Clearwater Canyon to the town of Stites.
