This is the dramatic and fascinating story of California's railroads during their golden era the time when determined men tied the Atlantic to the Pacific with bands of steel rails and then extended their empire throughout the State.
The construction and completion of the transcontinental railroad (Central Pacific-Union Pacific) was considered to be an engineering marvel and a financial gamble. Its completion not only opened up the American West to migration, but changed its course in history. Between 1850 and 1911, railroads were center stage in California's history. During this time the Southern Pacific, the outgrowth of the Central Pacific, obtained great political influence in the State.
This volume presents, for the first time, California's over-all railroad story. Featured is the building of the Central Pacific eastward to meet the Union Pacific, the construction of Southern Pacific lines within California, and the building of the Sunset Route into the Southwest. Also portrayed is how the Southern Pacific prevented the Texas Pacific from reaching a California terminal, and the outmaneuvering of Collis P. Huntington and his Southern Pacific by the Atlantic and Pacific with Santa Fe
