This is the first in a two volume set of color books covering the electric railways of California. They can be thought of as an extension to the previous color books by the author on the Pacific Electric In Color Volumes 1 and 2. As with those books, thia is not a history or thorough review of the other Southern California electric railways. This is a color pictorial of San Diego and Los Angeles (excluding the Pacific Electric) in the late years of their existence. Large sections of the San Diego Electric Ry. (including the long suburban lines to Point Loma, Ocean Beach and La Jolla) were abandoned before World War Two, and some minor lines in Los Angeles had also been converted to bus by this time. World War Two, with its increased traffic levels and gas rationing, kept many streetcars in service.
The San Diego Electric Ry. experienced a 360% increase in traffic levels, and had to purchase extra equipment from Salt Lake City, Utah, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and New York City. The Los Angeles "yellow car" system also enjoyed increased traffic, but with a narrow 3'6" track gauge, had to get by by pulling older cars out of storage and buying new streamlined trolleys. After the War, traffic levels declined as former patrons turned to the private automobile. As an economy measure, the San Diego trolley lines were converted to motor coach in 1949. In 1945, the Los Angeles Ry. (LARY) was sold to new owners who renamed the system the Los Angeles Transit Lines, and proceeded to modernize the system with new buses, trolley coaches and even more modern streamlined streetcars. The modernization and declining traffic levels caused most Los Angeles streetcar lines to be converted to rubber tired vehicles, and by 1958, when the system was sold to the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority, only five streetcar lines remained. Within a short time, the few conventional streetcars were replaced with surplus streamlined cars. In 1963, the five streetcar and two trolley coach lines were converted to diesel buses. A number of streetcars were sold for use elsewhere, and examples of a number of Los Angeles and San Diego electric vehicles have been preserved at the Orange Empire Railway Museum at Perris, Calif.
