0NE HUNDRED YEARS AGO they drove steel across Cajon Pass, creating that legendary rail passage to the Pacific that is today's mighty artery of commerce.
Chard Walker is the one man who can tell this story superbly. He was the operator at Summit, where the Santa Fe and Union Pacific turned the helpers, where passed endless fleets of troop trains in wartime and streamliners full of vacationers in peace. Where the tonnage rolled day and night-and where there was a little ex-funeral streetcar named Descanso which became the spiritual home of a generation of railfans.
This book will make you stand in awe of Cajon and the Santa Fe, UP and Southern Pacific railroaders who worked there-and still toil to conquer the grades and move the tonnage. In this volume we borrowed some text but very few photos from the original Railroading Through Cajon Pass published in 1978 by another company in a different format.
Here, then, is the complete story of Cajon Pass in words and photos, augmented by the superb cartography of John Signor. We take you from the very beginning right up to the present day, as the lore was gathered and the facts written by a railfan/railroader who was there at the right time.
