The railroad locomotive has always been the most fascinating part of a freight train. But, the last car is just as important. Until recently all freight trains in North America were trailed by the caboose, or in Canada, commonly know as the van. The caboose has now all but vanished in the United States and is on the threshold of the same fate in Canada. Mexico though, at present still uses cabooses on all freight trains.
Today, technology has replaced the caboose in the U.S. except for special applications. Replaced with a device called an "ETM" End of Train Monitor or more commonly known as just plain "marker." The reason for this recent wholesale elimination of the once familiar caboose is cost effectiveness. The railroads in past years have been able to win concessions from the Unions on reduced crews. Cabooses are expensive to operate and maintain, and a new caboose can cost over $200,000. So, the remaining crew members were moved up to the engine. In today's world of computers, it was inevitable that the caboose would be replaced.
