PREFACE
THE ILLUSTRATIONS were executed by William Wilke, an artist who stands high in San Francisco. Genius such as his has contributed to the lofty position pen-and-ink work holds in the field of art.
I am thankful to Samuel I. Wormser, who gave me his recollections of events which took place when his father was the first treasurer of the California Street Cable Railroad Company.
Samuel Pond I thank for a copy of Vignettes of Early San Francisco Homes and Gardens and a considerable amount of helpful information regarding Nob Hill in the late 'eighties.
I am indebted to the late James W. Harris for his readiness to reconstruct for me the sixty-year history of the California Street Cable Railroad Company.
I desire to express my gratitude to the following: Lester Wells, Secretary of the Company, who assisted me in delving into records of directors' and stockholders' meetings dating back many years; Antoine Borel, Jr., George Coleman, S. Waldo Coleman, Harry Stetson, the late Ralph Hare, and Frank Buck, who provided me with information concerning their fathers' activities in the Company; Archie Treat, the late Joseph Cummings, David Oliver, and John McGaw, who contributed recollections of personalities; Fred Boeken, for the loan of a valuable scrapbook; R. A. Couey, former Superintendent of the California Street Cable Railroad Company, for data concerning James W. Harris; Jack M. Dodson, for valuable assistance rendered in connection with checking the manuscript; John William A. Hall, the oldest conductor, and George Mitchell, the oldest gripman, of the California Street Cable Line, for many anecdotes; Gelett Burgess for the use of his "The Ballad of the Hyde Street Grip"; Miss Jean Price, of the Library School of the University of California, for her research work in my behalf at the Bancroft Library; Miss Mabel Gillis, State Librarian at Sacramento, for furnishing me with many references; Lindley Bynum, for material from the Henry E. Huntington Library at San Marino; Phillip McLean, for information gathered in the Hopkins Transportation Library at Stanford University; Pardee Lowe, who collaborated with me on the chapter on Chinatown ; the Society of California Pioneers for the use of several illustrations; and the California Historical Society for material on Andrew S. Hallidie.
I am indebted to friends who supplied me with a fund of personal information: H. M. A. Miller, C. 0. G. Miller, John Freuler, Berthold Guggenhime, the late H. R. Williar, the late Albert Bender, Fred Pickering, the late Dr. Emmet Rixford, James K.
