This is the first volume of a 3 volume set on the pageant of "the little red caboose behind the train". Volume 2, which will be out soon, covers the mid-western and southern railroads, as volume 1 covered those to the North and East. Volume 3 will cover the transcontinental roads and those of the far west. Volume 3 will also cover the cabooses of Alaska, Canada and Mexico. If demand and materials warrant there may be a volume four which will act as a supplement to the first three volumes. Our thanks to the many photographers who took the time to shoot the back end. Many of us, myself included, devoted most of our efforts to the front end. With the passing of the caboose, we now realize the mistake. I guess we never thought it would happen.
