INTRODUCTION The romantic image that railroading may conjure up in your mind is one thing. The reality of railroading is the hardship of often working long hours under difficult conditions as well as days away from home and family. However, there also were many pleasant memories of days on the railroad, family ties and lasting friendships. All of this forms the background for the C&S HIGH LINE MEMORIES and Then Some.
The men of these railroad families spent most of their lives working the High Line from Como through Breckenridge, Dickey, (now on the bottom of Dillon Reservoir), Kokomo (now buried beneath the tailings from the Climax Mine), Leadville and a number of other small mountain towns. Since the web of the Colorado & Southern trackage radiated out from Como these railroaders covered the "High Line and Then Some".
The basis for this book is the personal memories and memorabilia that descendents of former Colorado & Southern railroaders have provided. For us, this has put life back onto the streets of Como and has given us a vivid image of trains and their crews working their way across the Colorado & Southern South Park Line. We sincerely hope it is the same, for you, the reader.
C&S HIGH LINE MEMORIES and Then Some spans the years that A. A. Anderson spent working as an engineman on the Colorado & Southern narrow gauge as well as time working on the standard gauge. From 1909 until 1943 he crisscrossed all but a few segments of the vast Colorado & Southern narrow gauge system. By the time of his retirement in 1952, when he was working on the Colorado & Southern standard gauge in Denver, the Colorado & Southern narrow gauge was but a fading memory.
With access to the wealth of information that A. A. Anderson accumulated pertaining to the Colorado & Southern's narrow gauge, its employees and their families, you will be able to gain an insight into the working life of a South Park railroader. Mountain passes, steep grades, blizzards, avalanches and long hours were just a few of the hazards that trains and railroad crews had to face. For railroaders whose homes were in Como, there was the added burden of families living in an isolated area with limited conveniences.
A. A. Anderson's photos and mementoes along with interviews of other Colorado & Southern railroaders' descendants create an image of the Colorado & Southern High Line. The authors hope is that C&S HIGH LINE MEMORIES and Then Some will either rekindle or create memories for you of a time that is now history as well as introduce newcomers to the era of the Colorado & Southern High Line.
