ORIGINS AND BEGINNINGS
By the second half of the nineteenth century the major agricultural areas of Southern Ontario were well settled. Immigrants and younger sons were looking for new areas to open up for settlement. Some of these people moved into Muskoka and Haliburton regions of Central Ontario.
The railways did not come very far north at this time, reaching only as far as Barrie in ls51 Any travel beyond the railway was accomplished by steamboat, stagecoach, oxcart or foot, and because of the condition of the roads only the steamboats were reliable.
The Muskoka Road, one of the many colonization roads constructed in Ontario, started at Washago, because Washago could be reached by water from Barrie. By 1858 the Muskoka Road reached Gravenhurst on Lake Muskoka and was opened to Huntsville in 1871. This road and many others had been constructed by the Government in order to promote settlement in new areas.
