INTRODUCTION
Come WITH us for a little while to the gravelly hills and pine bordered ponds of Maine where a short narrow gauge railroad dared to elbow its way through the primeval forest between Bridgton and Hiram in deepest Cumberland County. Memories of the little line are growing fainter, even as the right of way succumbs to second growth brush and the erosion of Time, and it is past due to recall the hopes and glories of another day.
Narrow-gauge land was peopled by witty, friendly, patient folk as I grew to know them during school vacations as a railroadical man-of-all-work, finally ending as Superintendent at the tender age of 19. No doubt my official reports are still treasured archivally at the I.C.C. in Washington, and I chuckle about that. Sipping a sodapop "tonic" whenever there was time to sit and talk one quickly absorbed those salty oaths and Down East mannerisms. "By gory, you're quite a cuttah" was standard speech, echoing ancestral sounds of the Yankee countryside. Personalities, blasphemy and the latest off-color jokes imported from Portland, these were the conversation of the Narrow Gauge. It was all this and more, for $18 per week.
