In the heady days when passenger trains crisscrossed America in large numbers, the Zephyr name commanded special attention. To travel aboard (or even be eyewitness to) a train that was an anointed member of Burlington Route's splendid Zephyr fleet was a mark of both esteem and adventure.
This books tells the story of how the fabulous Zephyr network evolved from the spunky little Zephyr 9900-a three-car slip of stainless steel born in 1934-to a far-flung fleet of nimble, gleaming trains that linked the great states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, and beyond with California and the Pacific Ocean. In these pages you'll witness nearly every one of the great Burlington Zephyrs: the diminutive 9900 on its record-breaking dawn-to-dusk run from Denver to Chicago in May 1934; the Denver Zephyr as it speeds through an Iowa thunderstorm; the Twin Zephyrs and Mark Twain Zephyr as they glide along the banks of the Mississippi River; even the Amtrak trains that carried the Zephyr moniker into the new millennium. Included are detailed accounts of power car, locomotive, and rolling-stock purchases and assignments; behind-the-scenes glimpses of Zephyr design and construction; an overview of Zephyr operations; and a special look at how dome cars revolutionized the Zephyr fleet.
Lavishly illustrated with classic railroad publicity photos, black-and-white and color scenes photographed by independent railroad historians, and railroad art in the form of menus, train brochures, and other ephemera, Burlington's Zephyrs will keep you entertained for hours and provide a good reference for transportation historians.
