AUTHORS FOREWORD                                                                                                                                    Volume Three completes our coverage of the Burlington's renowned passenger train service from 1960 through 1970. Unfortunately, during the late 1960s, due to circumstances which had been mostly beyond its control, several of its stainless-steel Zephyrs and other passenger trains had been revised drastically or disappeared altogether rather abruptly. However, others continued to be operated by BN (Burlington Northern) following the Burlington's merger along with its owners, Great Northern and Northern Pacific, and with the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway, which had occurred at midnight on March 1-2, 1970. They had been operated until Amtrak came upon the scene on May 1, 1971.
The aggressive positive efforts implemented by Burlington to counter the nation's "Passenger Train Problem" are presented in the "Pro-Passenger Q: 1960-1965" chapter in this volume. The abrupt negative change in its passenger train policy has been described in the chapter "West Wind Declines, 19661970". Former Burlington's passenger trains, which continued to be operated by Burlington Northern during the short 1970-1971 period prior to Amtrak, are covered in the chapter "Burlington Northern: 19701971". Operation during 1971 by Burlington Northern of Amtrak's former Burlington passenger trains is also presented in this volume. Burlington's excellent commuter train service, which continued onward with its operation by Burlington Northern, is presented in the chapter titled, "The Dinkies". ALL ABOARD!
