Introduction
In the latter part of the 1950's two important changes occurred to the Burlington's motive power fleet. One was cosmetic, the other technological. On the cosmetic side,
the introduction of the striking Chinese Red color scheme first applied to freight cars in 1958, then to diesels in 1959, gave the road one of the brightest, most distinctive color schemes in the industry.
Of far greater importance was the technological advancement in diesel motive power with the development of Electro-Motive's turbo-charged diesel power plant. Tested on the Burlington and the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range in 1958 and formally introduced to the industry during December of that year, the SD24, as this new model was called, ushered in a new era of high horsepower locomotives known as the "second generation" diesels.
