This 1995 edition of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Annual monitors the merger of the Santa Fe Pacific Corporation and Burlington Northern Inc. into the

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF). Consolidation of the two corporations also set the stage for the merger of subsidiaries the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and the Burlington Northern Railroad into the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF). The merger of the two corporations was consummated on September 22, 1995. Merging of operations of both railroads began immediately thereafter with formal merger of these companies originally intended to be consummated on January 1, 1996. However, the railroad merger has been rescheduled until late spring 1996 with no announced date as this book went to press.

Last year's annual was a continuation of the Burlington Northern Annual book series began in 1970 by F. Hol Wagner, Jr. and continued in 1980 by this author. The title was modified in 1994 in conformance to the anticipated Burlington Northern - Santa Fe merger and introduced the Santa Fe as intended BN's merger partner. This book brings the Santa Fe on board as a full-fledged merger partner with both railroads covered in the context of their impending merger. There is a slant, however, toward the BN as this book series is also making its own transition from the Burlington Northern Railroad to the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company via the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Next year's Burlington Northern Santa Fe Annual will have completed the merger transition by reviewing the new BNSF Railway with features on the former BN and Santa Fe.

The topics specifically covered herein discuss the corporate merger and the general plans as to how both railroads are to be merged. Each railroad's performance throughout the year within their own traffic commodity groups are reviewed as each were separate entities during the entire period. The photographs selected for illustration are an attempt to preserve the identity of each railroad while at the same time reflecting the merger transition in progress. A BN-related feature story on its second ten years is presented as a continuation from the previous Burlington Northern Santa Fe 1994 Annual by Four Ways West Publishing. The final third of the book is devoted to motive power. Not only is the motive power of both railroads reviewed, but the final roster of each is listed with accompanying photos, as of December 31, 1995.
