- INTRODUCTION -
The year of 1994 was a very good one for the Burlington Northern Railroad. It rang in with a bang when it
christened the revolutionary new Brunswick green and cream SD7OMAC a.c. traction locomotive on January 10th in Fort Worth, Texas. It first appeared that the news of the year would be the intense competition for traffic between the BN and western rival Union Pacific. But that never happened. Instead, news poured forth of the dramatic increases of intermodal traffic nationwide and the record tonnage of low sulfur western coal being hauled out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin by both the BN and Chicago & North Western. Railroads were in a renaissance and there was boomtown prosperity everywhere one looked. Early in the year, rumblings of a merger of the Kansas City Southern into BN surfaced as it was ripe for the picking. But those rumblings trickled to a gurgle as rumors of something bigger floated in the air. Staring down UP was now kid stuff as there were more important achievements to be accomplished. In the meantime, the SD7OMAC's performed marvelously with other Class I railroads hurriedly ordering their own so as not to be left behind in the technology race.
