INTRODUCTION
IT'S DIFFICULT TO understand the history of Burlington Northern's locomotives without understanding something about Burlington Northern itself. Since it's not within the scope of this book to detail three decades of BN history, you may want to check out George H. Drury's `Burlington Northern" listing in The Train-Watcher's Guide to North American Railroads [Kalmbach]. In the meantime, here is my own highly subjective overview of the railroad's history:
