In writing this book I have used industry standard terms that are in many cases less common among railfans and modelers. The primary term being the GRL or Gross Rail Loading. This is the sum of the freight car's light weight (also called tare weight) and the car's load limit (or cargo weight capacity). For the Burlington Northern freight car fleet there were four major categories: 177,000 lbs. (50-ton trucks), 220,000 lbs. (70-ton trucks), 263,000 lbs. (100-ton trucks), and 286,000 lbs. (110-ton trucks). I've also used dimensional abbreviations and terms that define each respective type of freight car. Thus some types are defined by their internal dimensions while others are defined by their outside dimensions. Whenever possible I tried to use stenciled dimensional data. This often
will differ with official railroad sources. However, when an entire series of 100 cars are all stenciled with the same dimensional data I feel this historic priority over railroad diagrams which may be using a generic number. I also want to note that often length, height and width measurements may be off by one inch because of differing methods of rounding off.
The Burlington Northern had several major freight car shops that were identified with a letter code found in reweigh dates and repainting information on the cars:
