Few railroads dominate the U.S. scene as much as Burlington Northern. It's hard not to, when your tracks pursue ports as divergent as Mobile, Ala., and Tacoma, Wash., or when your intermodal trains flash across arid Nebraska prairies as well as along cool Rocky Mountain rivers, or when your heritage is rooted in five sigClass I carriers.
But BN's emergence as one of Ameriforemost railroads did not happen overnight. Indeed, the movement for an amalgamation of Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Great Northern, Northern Pacifand Spokane, Portland & Seattle can be traced to the turn of the century, with additional attempts in the 1920's, 1950's and 1960's. Then, on March 2, 1970, dreams unfolded into reality and Burlington Northern became a very real entity. On paper, the consolidation was now complete, but in terms of opera, the consolidation had only begun.
In the 21 years since "M-Day," Burlington Northern has reaped the benefits of merger and proven that unifiof what in some cases had been rival railroads could be accomplished with deft and efficiency. In BN's relativeshort history (the youngest of BN's four predecessors, SP&S, was already 62 at the time of merger while CB&Q was well over 100 years old, which makes BN a comparative youngster), it has grown to a transportation giant with few equals.
BURLINGTON NORTHERN AND ITS HERITAGE documents not only the unification, growth and operations of BN, but reviews-and celebrates-the lives and times of Burlington Route, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Spokane, Port& Seattle and Frisco... five railwhose histories are critical to knowing and understanding the Burlington Northern of today.
