If having an interesting hobby is helpful toward a happy, well-balanced life, then Bernard Corbin need make no explanation for the serenely busy existence he leads, for railroads have been an avocation of his ever since he was a youngster, fascinated at the sight of an Eight Wheeler chugging across the rolling Iowa countryside. Always mechanically inclined and an artist with precision tools, Bernard found his way into the mammoth printing enterprise of the Thomas D. Murphy Company in Red Oak, and now supervises all of their machinery. But his love of the rails has grown and has manifested itself in photography, dark room techniques, the building of models, the collection of data, and the publishing of books. Bernard has a priceless collection of negatives of rail scenes, both old and new; the basement of the Corbin home houses an 0-gauge model Burlington railroad, unique in the fact that Bernard scratch built each of the ten locomotives from prototypical plans. Recently, he completed his second T-2 Compound Mallet, and now an Atlantic is on the drawing board. To perpetuate the memory of the fine fleet of Burlington steam locomotives, Bernard Corbin did a book entitled, "Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route" in collaboration with Bill Kerka of Cleveland, and demand for it has necessitated a second printing.
"Burlington in Transition" serves to bridge the gap between the Burlington that was in the "good old days," to the modern, dieselized, computer-programmed system that the Burlington is now. It strives to keep alive in the hearts of railfans both a love of golden memories of the past, and a hopeful look at the prospect of an even more colorful operation in the future.
