Preface
This is not the story of a railway line, nor a person. Instead it is the story of one man at work on just one day of his life.
Having been fascinated by and studied the former Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway for many years now, I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to speak to and gather reminiscences from numerous staff-and including many of those mentioned within the text. Bill Hiscock was always a favourite. A gentle man, and who despite personal difficulty was ever willing to welcome me into his home to recount the stories of his working life at Burghclere and particularly as a signalman. Sadly he passed away some years ago and it was only some time after this, that part of a former train register from Burghclere Signal Box came into my possession. Within the worn pages of this unique document were recounted the days at work he and his colleagues would spent signalling trains through their station.
It was a small step then to use this as the basis for a description of perhaps a typical days work and which has been recounted as accurately as possible.
As such it is possible to recount a way of life that was typical on many of the former cross-country routes of the GWR, the MSWJ, Taunton to Barnstaple, Banbury-Cheltenham lines no doubt all very similar. Like the DN & S, none of these exist today and so a way of life that had survived for several generations is no more. A skill learned and practiced no longer required in today's technological age.
This then is the human element of railway working in the 1950's. 1 am not aware it has ever been recounted in this manner previously. Some assumptions and conclusions have had to be made of course, but these are both obvious and limited. The majority though is based on fact. One day in January 1958, a time when the trains still ran through Burghclere Station, and Bill Hiscock was the Early Turn Signalman.
